Ideas to work on at home with your child.
1. Let your child use kid's scissors to cut newspaper, magazines, scrap paper, and other household items you no longer need. I know it is kind of scary allowing your 4 year old to use scissors, but they need practice with this skill. It improves fine motor skills and helps them later when writing.
2. Whenever you go anywhere with your child, look at items around you and talk about letters you see. For example Bojangles starts with letter "B". Talk about that with your child and if they recognize the word "Bojangles" let them know that they are reading. This is one of the first steps of pre-reading for preschool children. Talk about the letter "F" starts the word Food Lion.
3. Let your child try to dress themselves with your help when needed. Help them learn to button, snap, and buckle clothes on their own. Start working on tying shoes. This is a hard skill for pre-k and kindergarten students to learn but we can go ahead and start working on them! These self help skills are very important in a Pre-K classroom.
4. Let your child write any letters whenever possible. A good idea is to get them a fun notebook they might like (Spiderman, Tinkerbell, Dora, etc..) to get them excited about writing. They can feel like they are doing their "school work" in their notebook. Pre-K kids love this!! Also start helping your child write their name when you feel they are ready. We will work on this in school too.
